CIRCLE#6
- THE HORSE HOSPITAL. LONDON. 22 - 23 October 2009.
SICK HORSES, POP CULTURE, COBB STONE FLOOR, SPOTLIGHT, ABSENCE
OF NATURAL LIGHT FOR 24 HOURS, ONLY SPOTLIGHTS AND SOUND OF
ELECTRIC GUITAR. AND MORE HORSES. SICK. HOLBORN. I USED TO LIVE
HERE. ROBERT O'BRIEN USED TO LIVE HERE TOO. 35 YEARS AGO. MAY
BE. HE'S A GREAT ARTIST I MEET IN HK. PERHAPS HE'S 100 BY NOW.
WHAT COLOURS ARE HORSES? FROM BLACK AND RUSTY RED TO GREY-BLUE.
DANCING, SCREAMING, FUCKING. AT THE END I WAS DESPERATELY
LOOKING FOR BLUE AS AN ELECTRIC LIGHT AND SOUND WAS MOVING MY
MIND FROM NATURE TO PLASTIC SHINY POP. SOME 80S PERHAPS STARTED
TO SHOW. ITS A BLESSING AT THE END OF THE PROCESS NOT TO THINK ANY MORE. BECOMING A HORSE REFLECTING ON POP IN THE BASEMENT ROOM OF THE HORSE HOSPITAL.
The sensation of 24 hours working in the space with no connection
with the outside, no natural light and only to be highlighted
by a bunch of spotlights: TIMETRAVEL. 22 October 2009, 5pm,
we went into the basement room of The Horse Hospital and 23
October 2009, 5pm, we came out from the basement. Street was
the same but it was hard to figure out were we away a day, a
moment, a year. The time of the absence was transformed into
the music, painting, video, photos and tonnes of dreams.

CIRCLE #6 - THE HORSE HOSPITAL LONDON
The home of experimental pop. James chose to use 12 electric
guitar players - again in a 50 meter circle - prefereably with
very long hair and bad attitudes and lots of tatoos and loud
amplifiers. Stratocasters on front pick up - lots of wammy bar

THE
CIRCLE - RIVER THAMES at Hermitage Moorings LONDON. 12 - 13
June 2009.
THE CIRCLE - RIVER THAMES is a first collaboration with composer
James Hesford. During 24 hours non-stop working process the
new circle was created as a painting and music composition.
Muddy waters of Thames were moving slowly reflecting bridges
and architecture and painting started to develop in the similar
way - slow flow of gray shades with endless layers of drawing,
coal, pencil, brush. Limits of the river trapped into its concrete
shores with tides exposing and covering banks of big city crumbles,
washed away things, opening the framework of piers and covering
again. River boats were pulling its cargo by the narrow flow
to the open estuary and back again. Gray layers of paint were
covering black lines and black lines were coming back again
and again on the gray surface. The working space at the Mooring
is a pontoon with a roof but no walls on the East and West side.
North, South, East and West started appear on the painting.
Perhaps it was some big idea at the beginning of the process
which was transformed by the time and at the end of 24 hours
everything was flowing by its own rules - i just had to keep
moving. I could hear some fragments of James composition repeating
again and again and may be started to move in the rhythm. Sound
was great and I tryed to push painting to match it. Long Sleeves
of the dress were moving slowly just gliding on the surface
of the circle. Slowness, limits, reflections and repetitions
of the river tides.
Collaboration:
- My working Dress, Working Tools, Video and Photographs by
Tsz Man Chan. The Dress, as a working tool, went trough next
stage of transformation and work on Thames added a gray layer
to the red of the Red Circle of Berlin.

MUSIC
BY JAMES HESFORD : THE CIRCLE - RIVER THAMES. LONDON
Twenty four hour non-stop work period - Friday 12th -Saturday13th
June 09. This first collaboration in the Circle Painting project
resulted in a short composition which explores the physical
space of a circle. It was written for 9 violins and 3 cellos
- Twelve musicians take their place around the circumference
of a 50m diameter circle like the numbers of a clock –
12, 1, 2, 3.etc. The cellos are 5, 6 and 7 o'clock– the
listener is outside the circle a few feet away from the cellos
and 50 + meters away from violin one (placed at 12o’clock).
Dynamics are even throughout the piece – “f”
The space was created digitally and worked into - like a painter
works into a canvas. Throughout the period James observed the
movements of Ivanov and Chan as they worked inside the circular
canvas. James now plans to create 12 compositions based around
the 12 circular canvases
